Trail and text updates for Hiking Colorado III, a Falcon Guide, by Maryann Gaug

Updated trail and text information will appear on this page until the second edition is printed.

Hike 3: Arkansas Point Trail System

On pages 30 and 31, the text reads that the flood of 1921 created Lake Pueblo. This is an editing mistake! Lake Pueblo was created by the dam that was started in 1970. The flood of 1921 may have created a desire for a dam and thus a lake, but it didn't create the lake!

Hike 18: Notch Mountain (view of Mount of the Holy Cross)

Group size limit has been reduced from 25 people to 15 people with a maximum combination of 25 people and pack or saddle animals in any one group.

Hike 20: Granite Lakes Trail (Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness area near Basalt)

Group size limit has been reduced from 25 people to 15 people with a maximum combination of 25 people and pack or saddle animals in any one group.

Hike 25: East Marvine Trail (access to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area near Meeker)

Group size limit has been reduced from 25 people to 15 people with a maximum combination of 25 people and pack or saddle animals in any one group.

Hike 31: Rock Pond to Werley Ranch Loop (Mueller State Park and Dome Rock State Wildlife Area)

A few little changes. 1. Rock Pond Trail now ends at a trail called Werley Ranch Trail (instead of Werley Ponds Trail).
2. After leaving Werley Ranch and heading to the right to continue the loop, you are immediately on Cabin Creek Trail. As you walk along, there's a fence to your left. Look for an opening in the fence. You'll see a brown carsonite post with Cabin Creek Trail written on it. The trail turns left here and goes straight across the little dam in front of you. This new trail (doesn't look like a trail) eliminates the loop shown at the bottom of the trail map.

Hike 37: Dunes Hiking

The Nature Conservancy signed an agreement to purchase about 97,000 acres of the Baca Ranch in January 2002. The acquisition is the first of a complex series of transactions that by 2005 is expected to create the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the Baca National Wildlife Refuge. For up-to-date information check out www.nps.gov/grsa and nature.org (search on Baca Ranch).

Hike 49: First Fork and Red Creek Loop (east of Durango)

These trails were in the Missionary Ridge fire in 2002. Before hiking them in 2003, please contact San Juan National Forest for current conditions. The Forest Service was not sure they would be able to do trail maintenance if needed on these trails during 2003.
