Wilderness with a capital "W" refers to congressionally designated wilderness areas and related specially protected areas. These areas are generally closed to motorized and mechanized (including mountain bikes) travel.

Wild places refer to national forest, Bureau of Land Managements, National Park Service, wildlife refuges, state-owned, and privately owned refuges that are still wild and offer a way to escape from the modern mad pace of life. These areas may be open to multiple use including foot, horse, mountain bike, 4WD, snowmobiles, snowshoes, and skis or open to only a few uses.
